I was trying to remember a Mark Twain quote and got VERY depressed.
I think I've come to finally realize what it is that I truly dislike about my job: It's not cutthroat. There's no one I can compete with for a better position, there's no room for advancement, and that makes it generally just a boring place to be. There's no incentive for me to complete my work in a timely, efficient manner. And thus I do this, I blog. I blog when I could be updating databases and overhauling websites.

I can't blame anyone but myself for this, truly; I knew what was required of me when I took this position and I was aware of these facts in advance, and it seems pointless of me to complain. But when I'm sitting down with my girlfriends, listening to them rehash their stories of board meetings and executive reviews and rampaging through the halls of the state house, I long for that.

Finances, who doesn't hate them? )

Also, this comes at the worst time, as I do not trust the federal government to have deposited my stimulus check into my account by tomorrow. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have the highest faith in the treasury to accurate mete out cash. If you want to figure out when YOU'RE going to be "stimulated", click here.

Edwards makes an endorsement... )

To be honest, I pity anyone attempting to figure out just how our government works. You think we simply elect a president in a popular vote? Nay-nay. This, for instance is one of those queer little gatherings that you don't really hear about every day, you know?

All of my ranting has really come to the surface due to the fact that I'm reading the newest book by one of my favorite authors, Christopher Buckley. Boomsday, thus far is not only entertaining, it's infuriating and inspiring. Currently, my favorite portion is when presidential hopeful Randolph Jepperson is asked-aside from an acid trip he once had in the JFK Library-what his reasons for wanting to be Commander In Chief are: )

whoa...
I read most of Small Favor yesterday. Finished it last night. I'd started it as soon as I got it from Max on tuesday but yesterday was insane marathon reading. No putting the book down. I'm lucky that I remembered to eat.

So wow and damn I want someone else to have read it so I can talk to them about it. And the next installment, Turn Coat, won't come out until April 2009. A year of waiting, like I did with this one. Crap.

Butcher, you rock but write faster.

Concert Announcement
Hello all,

I think the majority of readers are based in the US so this may not have much relevance, but it might be of interest to some brethren. If you happen to be visiting it might be convenient, or you might know someone on this side of the pond!

The Military Lodge of Ireland No 728 is holding a charity concert of light classical music on 27th September 2008 in the Grand Lodge Room at Freemasons Hall in Dublin, followed by a wine reception in the catering rooms.

This is to support the Grand Masters Festival in support of the Laura Lynn Foundation and the Samaritans.

The Laura Lynn Foundation is raising funds to build and support a Childrens Hospice in the Republic of Ireland. Funds raised in Northern Ireland will go to support the Norther Ireland Childrens Hospice.

The Samaritans in Ireland are raising funds to provide counselling to prevent teenage suicide, which is on the rise in this country.

If anyone is interested please contact me directly. (eoin dot meehan at gmail dot com)

Yours fraternally,
Eoin

Ever notice when you're moving away from a place all the neat things you're going to miss really pop out at you?
The punk rock parents with their stripey socked 4 yr olds, civil war renactments, anarchist tamale feeds(the fact that they happen whether or not you go), pretentious philosophy students, the pretty redbuds, real farmland & mellow-tude of this place will not be replaceable. Part of me wishes little town Kansas was still viable for us....the part that spent the last 15 years out here in the plains and is just a little scared to be returning to my other home town because I am afraid that or I have changed too much to fit. Then I remember that no matter how nice Lawrence is ,there aren't any good jobs, that our state tried to ban evoloution, that there is no second parent adoptions for us here, that we will not be able to get legally married here for at 25 more years, and that if I want to do anything I have to get back in school.Part of me also longs for the even smaller town atmosphere of your own neighborhood in a big city, the trains & the surprising bits of nature that are all the more apparent due to their contrasts with traffic & population density.

The Wrong Pitcher Cut?
Looks like the Sox designated the wrong pitcher for assignment. How can anyone justify keeping Craig Hansen on the main roster instead of shipping him back to AAA or just trading him altogether? Sorry, but he's not what everyone thought he was. This is his final option year with Boston and I hope to god they don't pick it up. Now Jed Lowrie on the other hand. I think he's going to be a great future addition in the same form as Dustin Pedroia.

"I think I have monogamy. I must have caught it from you people." -- Kim Cattrall
Okay, so a friend of mine posted this little snippet in her LJ and I am finding that I must do the same to hear what you guys all think:

According to the '05 Kinsey report, females aged 30-44 report having an average of FOUR sexual partners over...their *lifetime*.

Anybody out there feel like they are throwing off the average?? Does an average of four seem like lots of women are lying?

this season's finale question - non-spoiler
am i right in thinking that the final 3 hours are effectively one continuous episode split into 1 and 2 hour chucks shown across two weeks with a week's break in between?

if that is indeed the case, i think i'll save and watch all three together!

does anyone know if what i've said is true?
